Knitting Therapy
I was scrolling through my daily dose of Yahoo news and came upon this article. It backs up what many of us already knew, that crafting is amazing! The article uses research to show a connection between crafting, like knitting, and treatment for mental disorders like depression, anxiety, and even ADHD. Back in my NYC teaching days, I started a knitting club. I used that as the basis for my Graduate thesis about developing personal connections with students to promote academic achievement. I noticed a strong connection between a student's sense of accomplishment and mastery with a knitting project and a student's attitude and effort in school. Now I can add that it offers a release for students suffering from a variety of mental illnesses. I might need to carry around some knitting projects in my school bag!
