I finally found an image of another comprehension project I used with A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. We created board games that included events in Salva's life. It was a dice game. Landing on a good event moved you forward. Landing on a bad event moved you back.

Here is a collection of resources I've used when teaching A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. It also works well as an anchor text to Plato's current eighth grade Unit 1 assignments. Most of these activities were found through google. I also use graphic organizers that I find on freeology and modify them for my current unit.

A Long Walk to Water Gifted Project

While teaching A Long Walk to Water a few years ago, I gave students  an extensive list of final projects, and they got to choose their favorite. They ranged in skill level, learning styles, and challenge.

One of my gifted students impressed us all. She created a claymation video of Salva's story. This was all completed on her own time after school. Amazing!

     

A Long Walk to Water

I discovered this book during a historical fiction unit. It went over so well that I personally purchased a class set to use at my current school.

The novel, by Linda Sue Park, tells the true story of Salva Dut, a Lost Boy who survives the Sudanese Civil War of the 1980's. It also tells the fictional story of a young Sudanese girl, Nya, living in the more modern times.

It was a great hook to get students reading this year. We started the first reading unit with the book. I had many students finish the book in a day or two because they liked it so much!
