This year I completed the Common Sense Media Digital Citizenship certified educator program. Common Sense Media is a great source for parents, educators, and children to evaluate media and learn about safe and responsible online practices.
My 5th grade students completed the Digital Passport program. It is a program that uses videos and games to teach students about internet searching, fair use and copyright, cyberbullying, and safe online practices. The program also has a variety of teacher lesson plans and materials for all grade levels that meet the Common Core standards. I'm exploring the Digital Compass as well, another interactive teaching tool for grades 6-8.
The best part about Common Sense Media is that it is absolutely free! You can enroll students and see their scores and results for grading. Even the worksheets and lesson plans are free and downloadable.
To become certified, you must submit an application that explains how you used the materials to teach your students digital citizenship. Even if you're not looking for the certification, there are many great lessons, discussions, videos, and games that are definitely worth checking out.
Teaching lessons learned and shared by the Middle School teacher.
