Student Interactive Poetry Books

I purchased the Interactive Poetry Notebook from Teachers Pay Teachers a few weeks ago and used it for both classwork and assessment activities. Students were working in the poetry unit learning about figurative language and the types of poems. The Interactive Poetry Notebook combined different levels of thinking and learning towards these objectives. Students studied and identified terms, then used this knowledge to write their own poems. I usually conclude poetry by having students publish poetry books. This year, it was all incorporated into the Poetry Notebook. Since my students come throughout the semester, I created a few so that newer students didn't have to put together the whole book. Also, many students do not have supplies, so instead of using composition notebooks, we used paper and brads to bind the books. That also allowed us to break down the projects into daily lessons with students only having the materials for each day and then adding the additions to the back of the notebooks. The student below took a lot of pride and care into her poetry book.

I found an awesome poetry interactive notebook template. The creator, Erin Cobb, also offers Fiction and Nonfiction interactive notebooks that I will definitely be checking out. It was definitely worth the $12 because you can make as many copies as you need forever. And most English classes cover poetry so it works for a variety of grades. There are even blank template pages to add your own terms or poems. My students really love anything that involves cutting and coloring with a lesson, and this interactive notebook offers all of it. I'm going to try it next week, so I'll keep you posted!

Poe-tree

After scouring over Pinterest this summer, I found a great Poetry teaching tool. The Poe-tree explains the different types of poems discussed in class. It also offers examples (under the leaves). This clever and interactive anchor chart can be referenced throughout the poetry unit. It's also a pretty cool play on words that ties in nicely with poetry. Check out my Poe-tree below.
